I can’t look at Facebook without seeing friends rant and rave about something – gun control, the economy, gay marriage, Congress, the President, you name it.

My wife and I just met up with some of our best friends for a few days of R&R in Florida. One of the guys is a college roommate of mine that I hadn’t seen for a few months, and I was floored when I saw the difference in him just since New Year’s Eve.

Over the years, I have gotten lots of advice on my career, my business, and even my relationships with other people. While a lot of it hasn’t been worth remembering, and some of it was actually more damaging than helpful, there have been a few gems that have stuck with me:
In a recent article, shaven ultra-blogger Seth Godin pointed out that people are astonishingly bad at making decisions about money.
Well, duh. That’s hardly news.
Or is it?
If you’re working at a credit union, you’re probably pretty good with dollars and cents. And you’re surrounded by people who are also pretty good with money, or at least basic accounting.
I lost a week this month to the flu. I still went to work every day, met with clients and vendors, and taught my karate classes. I did laundry, loaded the dishwasher and straightened up the house. I even managed to drive down to Indiana University one of those awful days, sit in on my son’s travel abroad meeting and take him and his friends out for beer and pizza. (Yes, they are all legal, so I was the only one who could not eat or drink.)
What is the path of the enlightened credit union marketer?
Sorry, Grasshopper — I don’t know either. I’ve only been doing this for 17 years. But perhaps there’s something to learn from the traditions of Zen. Let’s take a deep breath, sit comfortably, leave today’s concerns behind for a moment, and ponder…
